It was a pity to miss Bude a couple of days ago – apparently Bill Bailey and Lee Mack were filming some walking there – what a social media opportunity it would have been to bump into them! Their walk – in memory of Sean Locke -will be somewhat ahead of me, so I doubt I will cross their path (They are doing 100 miles – lightweights!).
Today marked two changes in the ‘rhythm’ of the trip:
After seven successive days staying in people’s homes, I now have six nights in hotels or guest houses.
Today was completely free of hills and map reading in that I was simply following the Tarka Trail (former railway/cycle-path) for the entire journey.
That said, the (almost) 16 miles was tiring, because of the heat (and cumulative tiredness). But again I finished early enough (4.45) to have a doze – and a chat to Mission Control (daughter Hannah, who has been a wonderful support) before supper in the pub where I am staying. My first pizza of trip, and the first (and second!) pint of beer bought by me.
I can no longer say I have not stopped in a coffee shop as I had lunch in the excellent one that is part of the old station at Fremington on the Tarka Trail. Long queueing but the bacon bap was worth it.
But I have still not turned on a TV (I realised I have watched one – the end of the Euro Lionesses victory – but that was on when I arrived.) And I have not had an ice cream yet!
I am aiming to make the next three days as easy as possible. No proper rest day this week (though Wednesday is only 7 miles). I would like to feel fresh and ready at the start of the BIG day: Lynton to Minehead on Thursday.
I am staying in a pub in the middle of Braunton – I approached by back-streets so have seen nothing of the town - and may not do so. I hope the traffic and populus quieten down a bit when it is time to sleep!
