Today was the most relaxed so far – through back lanes (some quite hilly) and then on another cycle-way down into Ilfracombe. Rather hot, but quite a lot of shade. Fell even more in love with Lemonade, of which I had a pint at lunchtime. Less than 12 miles – and I needed shorter day. The first day I have not arrived exhausted. I was able to shower, sleep, go out for supper (Wetherspoons!) and be back before 7.00. Some days I have not finished walking until 6.30.
I was here in Ilfracombe in 2005, on holiday with Tom, when we stayed in a holiday cottage previously owned by Terry-Thomas, the comedy actor, generally type cast as a ‘bounder’. There was lots of TT memorabilia, and Dvds of his films, of which I particularly remember ‘School for Scoundrels’ which featured Alastair Sim making a running gag of the word ‘Yeovil’, which of course is where we lived at the time.
In a reference back a week, I had commented on the empty St Endellion church, with all the percussion gear set up. I received a message confirming none had been stolen – it turned out to be from Keith Price, whose kit it was. Keith is one of our favourite regular performers at Southwell Music Festival!
My friend and ex-pupil Kate has Covid, so, as I can no longer stay with her, my run of hotels/B+B s will now be eight – it will be Bristol before I stay with a real person again (that’s you, Bart). Get well soon Kate!
An observation about my paid-for accommodation – there is NO correlation between the price of the accommodation and the quality. While all have been clean, cool and quiet (or at least with good double glazing), so far the best accommodation has been the Airbnb in Porthtowan, which is also the cheapest. With the honorable exception of the Gunard’s Head (day 1) which justified its high cost, the other more expensive hotels are currently at the bottom of the list for service and convenience.
Tomorrow I will notch up 200 miles, Wednesday 2 weeks, and Thursday my third county. Progress…..
