Breakfast in Wetherspoons with Jill Lisa as none was available at Punch House – which otherwise fitted with the pattern of the cheaper places being better (but no biscuit). Very characterful landladies! Some extremely rowdy nightlife in the streets outside at about midnight.
Jill and Lisa walked with me along the Wye – great scenery – an on to Goodrich. Where we had lunch.Jill was worried that her knees might mean she did not make it the whole way, but she was delighted to make it to Godrich. Lovely to have them as part of the trip.
They caught a bus back for a second night in Monmouth, and I headed onwards on what turned out to be my second longest day so far – though nothing like so strenuous - or hot - as the longest one. Today came in at 19.5 miles. The afternoon was mainly country lanes. It was odd to pass by the Red Lion at Peterstow, which is where I had my suppers on my Wye Valley holiday in 2019.
My destination was the home of Crispin and Suzannah Pemberton. Crispin is the brother of my recently retired bass colleague at the Minster, Jeremy. Their house is down a track, off a lane – near to the middle of nowhere. The view from the garden is one of the most amazing I have ever seen, and we had a lovely supper to the backdrop.
After two 18 miles days and a 19, I am (a) pleased not to feel too shattered, and (b) delighted by a planned 12 mile day tomorrow!
